Smarta 100 chosen for 2013 - The Smarta 100, in partnership with O2, sought to find the best businesses in the UK. Not just those who make the most money, but the businesses that have the most original ideas and make a true difference. The wanted to find beacons of enterprising Britain, the small firms that are pushing the economic recovery forward, be it a brilliant social enterprise, an inspiring young tech start-up or a small manufacturer.
Previous winners have included onesie brand, Kigu, customer funded wine business, Naked Wines, crowd-sourced design firm Concept Cupboard and the world’s first designer energy-saving light bulb Plumen.
2013 didn’t disappoint with Smarta saying that they received 1,500 entries, 100 winners, 55,000 votes, 10 special award winners, £20,000 given away and one Smarta 100 together with O2 Business Of The Year, Give As You Live .

Top 5 Ways to Tell if you are in a Dead-End Job - Unfortunately, even “good” jobs can still be dead-end jobs. Job security and financial stability are not something that should be readily dismissed but if your current position does not allow your career to grow then it is probably time to consider making a change. Fortunately, there is no shortage of tools to help you look for a new position quickly and easily; for example, professional social networks like LinkedIn, as well as online jobs boards.
Here are five unmistakable signs that your job is a great big cul-de-sac that has brought your career to a sharp halt.
1: Getting promoted would require someone else to leave
This is a classic hallmark of the dead-end job. Whether your superiors acknowledge your talents but have no position available for you or you are simply unable to climb the ladder because someone else is sitting too comfortably on the next rung, it can be torture to be left with nowhere to go.
The real issue here is that often the only option left for you is to wait, without knowing how long it will be before things change. This can be incredibly frustrating as you are left in a passive position for an indeterminable amount of time.
2: Work no longer interests you
Not everyone can have their dream job, to think otherwise would be naive but it is not too much to ask that you can at the very least see value in your work and derive some form of satisfaction from doing it well. If you no longer can appreciate any element of your daily work, then you have entered a rather disheartening place where you are simply working to live.
Often this is not enough of a reason by itself to look elsewhere for another job. However, if your work no longer interests you and it does not look like things will change any time soon, then it is time to cast your professional eye elsewhere.
3: Your position no longer evolves
You have been in your current position for perhaps a couple of years, you enjoy the work but everyday has become the same. You are either worryingly comfortable with the status quo or yearning for more varied or challenging work but it is not forthcoming.
This is another common scenario that can cause concern over career stagnation. As you gain experience, you should be expecting an increase in responsibility and the chance to prove yourself with more challenging assignments. If these things are not happening, it is a pretty sure sign that you will not be moving up in the company quickly, if at all.
Worse still, if you spend too long doing the same work without any appreciable change, then you are missing out on the chance to gain new marketable skills and prove yourself at a higher level.
4: You are not valued as an employee
Being undervalued, or not valued at all, can present itself in many different forms. Whether you are being unfairly treated by employers or colleagues, your ideas and contributions are not being listened to or you are not getting any recognition for your efforts, the result is the same. It is time to move on and find an employer who can provide you with a working environment where you feel like a valued member of the company.
5: If a promotion opportunity came up, you would not want to take it
This is perhaps the most telling of all signs that you are in a dead-end job. If the opportunity for promotion is there but you have no inclination to take it, then you are definitely in the wrong company and perhaps the wrong industry entirely.
Whether the new position does not interest you, or you would simply prefer to stay in your current one, this is a sure sign that your career will stagnate if something does not change.
Your Next Move
If you have looked at this list and one or more of the signs apply to you, then it is time that you considered making a professional change. Whether that means applying to move horizontally within your own company or into a new enterprise entirely, it is important that you take the time to fully investigate the scope of what opportunities are available to someone with your current skill set and future ambitions.
Make sure that you use every tool at your disposal to search out an ideal new start. Work in IT for example? Using an IT Job Board can be the ideal method of quickly narrowing your search to job opportunities that are relevant to you. Not only can you keep abreast of upcoming jobs but you can set notifications so that you will never miss an opportunity when it comes onto the market.
Alternatively, you may not have to leave your current company if you think that there is a chance to make a change to your working environment. Do not be afraid to ask for more responsibility if you feel that your position is not evolving. If you are feeling undervalued, try to determine the source and address it directly.
Remember, there is nothing wrong in finding yourself stuck in a dead-end job. Addressing the problem is the first step towards solving it and moving towards a more rewarding working environment.
